The bronze puffer (Auriglobus modestus) is a compact freshwater species from the river systems of Southeast Asia, including the Mekong and waterways across Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Despite being listed here under a saltwater category, this is firmly a freshwater fish, at home in medium to large rivers with soft to moderately hard water. In the wild it feeds opportunistically on terrestrial insects, shrimp, seeds, and occasionally whole fish or even the scales and fin rays of other species. That last detail tells you something important about its personality. Like most puffers, it can be aggressive and nippy toward tankmates, and its varied predatory diet means you should think carefully before housing it with small or slow-moving fish. It reaches a modest adult size but packs a lot of attitude into that frame. Feeding in captivity should include meaty foods and hard-shelled invertebrates to help wear down its ever-growing teeth, which is a routine part of keeping any puffer healthy long-term. With a potential lifespan pushing into double digits, this is a real commitment of a fish. It rewards keepers who do their homework and can provide appropriately matched company. Or simply keep it in a species-focused setup.
