The Orangefin Tetra (Bryconops affinis) is a perpetually on-the-go fish from the coastal waterways of the Guiana Shield in northern South America, where it thrives in swift-flowing creeks and is most commonly found during low-tide conditions. In the wild it forms active shoals, spending virtually all its time in motion. A behavior it carries directly into the aquarium. This is not a fish that loiters. Keeping a proper group is essential, both for the species' wellbeing and to see its natural schooling behavior on display. In the wild it picks at plant matter and small invertebrates, and in the tank it will accept a varied omnivore diet without much fuss. That said, its constant activity and preference for well-oxygenated water with decent flow means it does best in the hands of a keeper who's thought through their setup carefully rather than a complete beginner. The orange-tipped fins give it a subtle but appealing look that reads better in a group than on a single specimen. At a maximum size approaching nearly five inches, it needs enough horizontal space to stretch its legs, so a roomy tank is a must.
