The Cajun Dwarf Crayfish (Cambarellus shufeldtii) is one of the smaller members of the dwarf crayfish group and hails from the slow-moving bayous, marshes, and backwaters of Louisiana and the surrounding Gulf Coast region. Unlike their larger crayfish cousins, these little crustaceans have a well-earned reputation for being relatively peaceful, making them a genuinely practical choice for community setups with small, non-aggressive fish. They tend to spend their time picking through substrate and plant matter, grazing on biofilm, decaying vegetation, and whatever small food items they can scavenge. A natural behavior that makes them handy little cleanup crew members. Their coloration is generally a muted brown or tan with darker patterning along the body, which provides good camouflage against natural substrates. Because of their small adult size, they do not need the kind of space that full-sized crayfish demand, and heavily planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots seem to bring out their most active and interesting behaviors. They are considered a forgiving choice for newer invertebrate keepers, provided water quality is kept stable. Like most freshwater invertebrates, they are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes. A fascinating and underrated addition to a well-managed freshwater setup.
