Found among aquatic vegetation in the river systems of the Brazilian Amazon, this large eartheater-relative, Caquetaia spectabilis, is one of those cichlids that rewards patient keepers with genuinely interesting behavior. In the wild it ranges across a broad stretch of Amazonian drainages, from the Madeira and Uatumã rivers through to Gurupá, and also appears in the Araguari River in Amapá and the Branco River system, suggesting a fish that is reasonably adaptable to varying blackwater and clearwater conditions. It is a carnivore by nature, so expect a menu of meaty foods in captivity. What makes this species particularly worth keeping is its parental behavior: pairs bond and deposit eggs on open substrate, then both partners share guard duty over the clutch and the resulting fry. That kind of cooperative brood care is genuinely engaging to watch. Despite its size, adults can grow to a respectable length, the care level is considered accessible even for newer cichlid keepers, as long as a sufficiently roomy tank is provided. Tankmates should be chosen with care given the territorial instincts that kick in during spawning, but outside of breeding the species is a solid, long-lived centerpiece fish.
