The Harlequin Sulawesi Shrimp (Caridina woltereckae) is one of several ornamental shrimp species native to the ancient lakes of Sulawesi, Indonesia, where it inhabits warm, hard, and alkaline waters that are quite different from the soft, acidic conditions many freshwater shrimp hobbyists are used to. The name harlequin suits it well. This is a boldly marked little animal, typically showing patches of vivid red and white that vary between individuals. Like its Sulawesi relatives, it has a reputation for being delicate during shipping and acclimation, but once settled into a stable, well-maintained aquarium it can prove reasonably straightforward to keep, which is reflected in its beginner-friendly care rating. The key is consistency. Sulawesi shrimp of all kinds are sensitive to swings in water chemistry and temperature, so a mature, stable tank matters more than any particular parameter target. A species-only setup or a tank housing other peaceful Sulawesi shrimp is generally the best approach, as these are small, slow-moving animals that will be easily outcompeted or harassed by most fish. Watching a group graze and interact across a lush, well-planted nano tank is genuinely rewarding.
