Found across rivers and coastal waterways of Australia and southern New Guinea, Hypseleotris compressa is an eleotrid goby with a fascinating and somewhat frustrating reproductive biology. Adults settle among aquatic vegetation and submerged branches in the lower reaches of rivers, though they are remarkably tolerant of a wide range of conditions, including full saltwater salinity, which explains their ability to occupy everything from upstream freshwater reaches to brackish estuaries. Juveniles in particular tend to favor faster-moving or brackish water early in life. In the aquarium, this species is a relaxed, beginner-friendly fish that accepts a varied diet including small crustaceans, mosquito larvae, and algae-based foods. Males come alive during spawning season, intensifying dramatically in color and performing elaborate displays while defending territories against rival males. They will spawn readily once mature, depositing up to several thousand tiny adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface and then guarding the clutch alone after driving the female away. The catch is what happens next: in nature, the newly hatched larvae drift downstream to develop in marine conditions before returning to freshwater as juveniles. Replicating this amphidromous life cycle in a home tank is genuinely difficult, so successful breeding remains rare in the hobby despite how willingly adults will go through the motions.
