Caryophyllia cyathus is a solitary stony coral belonging to the family Caryophylliidae, native to the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. Unlike the tropical corals that dominate the reef hobby, this species originates from cooler, dimmer waters. Often found attached to rocky substrates at considerable depth, where light is limited and currents are gentle but consistent. It grows as a single polyp in a hard, conical cup skeleton, which is the defining growth form of the true cup corals. The polyp itself tends to be fleshy and tentacled, expanding to feed when conditions suit it. Because it comes from temperate and sub-temperate environments, it sits somewhat outside the typical reef aquarium context, and keepers should be mindful that the warmer temperatures common to tropical reef systems may not be ideal. Its care is rated intermediate, reflecting the need for stable water quality and appropriate flow and lighting rather than any particular difficulty with feeding or aggression. It is considered reef safe, posing little threat to neighbors. This is genuinely a species for the curious and experienced keeper who wants something different from the usual Indo-Pacific offerings.
