The Giant Barb (Catlocarpio siamensis) is a genuinely enormous fish native to the major river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, including the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Maeklong basins. In the wild it moves between habitats seasonally. Adults favoring deep pools in large rivers while juveniles shelter in swamps, flooded forests, and small tributaries. It feeds broadly on algae, phytoplankton, detritus, and fruits from inundated vegetation. Wild populations have declined sharply due to overfishing and habitat degradation, and relatively few individuals survive long enough to reproduce. This is a species worth knowing about partly for that conservation context alone. In captivity the Giant Barb is essentially a public-aquarium fish. Adults can reach truly staggering lengths, and even younger specimens grow quickly and need vast, well-filtered systems to have any hope of thriving. The minimum tank recommendation of 1,000 gallons reflects reality. This is not a fish for home aquariums except in the most extraordinary circumstances. Juveniles are occasionally collected and placed in large ponds, where they can adapt reasonably well, and that setting is far more practical than any conventional tank. If you do encounter one, treat it with the seriousness the species deserves. This is a long-lived fish carrying real ecological weight.
