The Indian Butterflyfish (Chaetodon mitratus) is one of those species that keeps a low profile. Both in the ocean and in the hobby. Its natural range is scattered across a handful of remote Indian Ocean localities, including Mauritius, Réunion, Madagascar, and the distant Cocos-Keeling atoll, where it hugs steep outer reef walls and drop-offs at depth. Down there it picks its way through rubble zones and around growths of black coral and sea fans, sometimes forming loose aggregations of up to five individuals. Pairs form during spawning, which follows the egg-scattering pattern typical of butterflyfish. The color pattern is distinctive. A bright yellow body crossed by a bold dark diagonal band running from the dorsal area down toward the belly, giving it a mitered look that likely inspired the scientific name. Because it lives deep on exposed outer reefs, this species rarely turns up in the trade, and when it does, acclimating it can be a genuine challenge. Dietary flexibility as an omnivore works in its favor, but the combination of limited availability, deep-water origins, and still-patchy knowledge of its behavior places it firmly in intermediate-to-advanced territory. Not a beginner fish by any stretch.
