The Addis Butterflyfish (Chaetodon semilarvatus) is one of the most visually distinctive members of its family. A deep, warm yellow body overlaid with a series of fine orange-red vertical lines, and a dark mask that covers much of the face. It hails exclusively from the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, where it's a familiar sight around thriving coral formations, often spotted drifting in pairs or loose groups. One of its more endearing wild habits is hovering almost motionlessly beneath the broad ledges of plate Acropora corals, seemingly just taking a break from the current. In the aquarium, it brings that same calm, unhurried energy. Peaceful toward most tankmates, though it will push back against other butterflies and members of its own kind, so keeping multiples requires care and a generous amount of space. Like many butterflies, this one has a reputation for being finicky about coral polyps in the wild, so a reef setup comes with some risk. It's generally classed as intermediate, not because it's fragile, but because it needs stable water conditions and a varied diet to really settle in and thrive long-term. Given the right setup, it can be a long-lived, rewarding fish.
