The crosshatch butterflyfish (Chaetodon xanthurus) is immediately recognizable by the distinctive grid of dark lines running across its flanks. A pattern unlike anything else in the butterflyfish family. The body itself carries warm yellow-orange tones, and the overall effect is more geometric than the typical spotted or striped butterfly. In the wild, this species ranges across the western Pacific from Indonesia and the Philippines up through the Ryukyu Islands, where adults tend to cruise the clearer outer reef slopes and drop-offs, usually deeper than 15 meters. They show a particular affinity for staghorn coral formations and are typically encountered alone or in bonded pairs. Diet in the wild runs toward small bottom-dwelling invertebrates and algae. In the aquarium, the crosshatch butterfly settles in reasonably well compared to many of its relatives. It tends to be bold and interactive rather than shy, and it generally leaves most invertebrates alone, which is not something you can say about every butterfly. That said, it does have a reputation for being somewhat susceptible to marine ich, so good quarantine practice and stable water quality matter. Overall it sits in the intermediate range. Not a beginner fish, but not the most demanding butterfly you could choose either.
