The chameleon puffer (Pao turgidus) is a freshwater species native to the Mekong basin in Southeast Asia, with a possible presence in the Chao Phraya drainage as well. The common name comes from its ability to shift colors and patterning depending on mood and surroundings. A trait that makes it genuinely fun to watch as it goes about its day. Like most puffers, it has a rotund, almost comical body shape and that characteristic slow, hovering swimming style that sets the family apart from most other fish. It reaches a solid adult size, and the beak-like fused teeth it uses to crack open hard-shelled prey are no joke. This fish can do real damage to tankmates or even to a keeper's fingers. That means a species-only setup is almost always the right call, since cohabitation with other fish rarely ends well. The diet needs to include hard foods like snails, clams, or similar shelled invertebrates to keep those teeth worn down. Overgrown teeth are one of the more common health problems in puffer keeping.
