The Asiatic snakehead (Channa orientalis) is one of the smaller members of the snakehead family, and one of the more manageable for hobbyists willing to work around its territorial streak. Native to a broad stretch of Asia, from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka through to Indonesia, it occupies an impressive range of habitats in the wild, from clear mountain streams to stagnant, oxygen-poor water. That adaptability carries over into captivity, where it proves more forgiving than many predatory fish, though its intermediate care rating is well-earned. Like all channids, it breathes atmospheric air using specialized chambers above the gills, and you'll regularly see it surfacing for gulps of air. It lacks pelvic fins entirely, and juveniles and females show an ocellated spot near the rear of the dorsal fin. A useful identification point. Behavior-wise, it does best alone or with a single compatible partner rather than in a community setup, as adults become increasingly combative with one another. Where this species really shines is in breeding: it forms lasting pair bonds, with the male brooding eggs in his mouth, and the female actually produces infertile eggs to feed free-swimming fry. Brood care can continue for several weeks, making it one of the more rewarding snakeheads to breed in a dedicated setup.
