The ocellated snakehead (Channa pleurophthalma) is one of the more visually interesting members of a family already known for personality and presence. Native to the blackwater peat swamps and clear rivers of Sumatra and Borneo, this fish carries a row of bold, eye-like spots along its flanks. The ocelli that give it its common name. Like all snakeheads, it is an obligate air-breather, meaning it must have access to the water surface to gulp atmospheric oxygen, so a tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable. In the wild it inhabits both the tea-colored, acidic blackwaters typical of Bornean peat forests and clearer river systems, which hints at a reasonable degree of adaptability. It is a committed carnivore and will treat smaller fish as food, so tankmates need to be chosen carefully. Similarly sized, robust fish are the safest companions, though a species-only setup is often the simplest approach. Owners typically describe these fish as interactive and aware of their keeper, which is part of the appeal. With a potential lifespan pushing into the low teens, this is a long-term commitment best suited to someone who has done their homework on predatory fish keeping.
