Asian Snakeheads (Channa sp. 'five stripe') are a dwarf member of the family Channidae, identifiable by five oblique dark bars running across the upper flanks on each side. A pattern consistent enough that the fish is immediately recognizable once you've seen it. It has also circulated in the trade under the names C. sp. 'Kerala' and C. sp. 'umangii', reflecting the fact that its exact taxonomic identity remains unresolved. Like all snakeheads, the name comes from the large scales covering the head, which bear a real resemblance to the plated scales on a snake's face. The group as a whole possesses a pair of suprabranchial chambers that function as supplementary breathing organs, and you'll regularly see these fish surfacing to gulp air directly from the atmosphere. A handy adaptation that lets them tolerate water conditions that would stress most other species. Unlike the larger, more predatory snakeheads that occasionally make the news, this little species is genuinely peaceful by snakehead standards, making it a more manageable option even for keepers without much prior Channa experience. A species-specific setup tends to bring out the best in them. Breeding occurs with reasonable regularity in captivity, with the male taking on mouthbrooding duties. A rewarding behavior to observe if you get a pair settled and comfortable.
