The copperband butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus) is one of those fish that stops people in their tracks at the fish store, and then humbles them once it's home. Found across the Western Pacific from the Andaman Sea to Australia, it inhabits everything from bright coral reefs to murky estuaries and silty inner reefs, often encountered alone or in bonded pairs along rocky shorelines. That dramatically elongated snout is purpose-built for probing tight crevices after small invertebrates, worms, and similar prey, and it's a mid-column hunter that moves with slow deliberate purpose rather than frantic dashes. In the aquarium, the copperband's reputation is well-earned. This is genuinely a fish for experienced saltwater keepers only. It can be fragile after import, is notably susceptible to parasites and disease, and typically needs a well-established, mature system before it will settle in and begin eating reliably. It's also territorial toward its own kind and similar-looking species, so tankmate selection matters. The narrow banding pattern includes a false eyespot near the tail, a common trick among butterflyfishes to confuse predators about which end is which. Get the conditions right and earn its trust, and it can be a long-lived, deeply rewarding centerpiece fish.
