The eastern talma (Chelmonops truncatus) is an Australian endemic that most reef keepers will never see at their local fish store, which makes sourcing one a genuine project. Found along rocky reefs rather than coral-heavy systems, this species has a classic butterflyfish body plan. Deep, laterally compressed, and boldly patterned with vertical banding. It is closely related to the more familiar copperband butterflyfish but carries its own distinct look, including the truncated profile that gives it both its scientific and common names. In the wild, adults are almost always spotted in pairs, and that social bond appears to carry over into captivity, making it worth considering whether to keep two rather than a lone specimen. The diet in the wild leans on small invertebrates and algae picked from rocky surfaces, so replicating that varied carnivore diet in the aquarium is important for long-term health. This is not a species for beginners. The combination of its specialized feeding habits, the sheer tank volume it needs to thrive, and its relative rarity in the trade all point toward an intermediate to experienced keeper. If you can meet its needs, though, it is a genuinely uncommon fish with real personality.
