The Chequered Julie (Julidochromis marlieri) is one of the more characterful cichlids you can keep from Lake Tanganyika's rocky northwestern shoreline. Its bold checkerboard patterning of dark blotches on a pale body is distinctive, and it has an immediately recognizable way of moving. It hugs rock surfaces at any angle, swimming sideways along vertical faces or even upside-down beneath overhangs as naturally as most fish swim horizontally. In the wild it rarely ventures far from the rocks, staying close to cover and picking at small food items rather than actively hunting prey. In the aquarium, a Chequered Julie generally gets along with other similarly sized Tanganyikan cichlids like Altolamprologus or Cyprichromis, but it is a different story with others of its own kind. Adults are deeply intolerant of each other outside of a bonded pair. Finding that pair takes patience; buying a small group of juveniles and letting them sort themselves out naturally is far more reliable than introducing two adults together. Once a pair bonds, they typically stay together for life, and their breeding behavior, secretive cave spawning, shared brood defense, and a family hierarchy where the female takes charge during fry care, is fascinating to observe. No other Julidochromis species or geographic morphs should share the tank, as hybridization is a real risk. An intermediate-level species overall, but deeply rewarding once settled.
