The Royal Featherback (Chitala blanci) is one of the larger members of the notopterid family, a group recognized by their deeply humped body profile, tiny scales, long anal fin that flows continuously into the tail, and a built-in ability to gulp atmospheric air when oxygen levels drop. This species can be separated from its relatives by a scattering of small dark spots across the front half of the body that gradually merge into irregular diagonal streaks running back onto the fins. In the wild it occupies the mainstream Mekong River through Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, showing a clear preference for fast-moving water over rocky substrates and deep pools, actively avoiding sluggish backwaters and swampy areas. It is a crepuscular and nocturnal hunter, targeting fish, crustaceans, insects, and smaller vertebrates. During the rainy season, adults move into flooded forest to spawn, with males taking on nest-guarding duties. In captivity it is territorial toward its own kind and toward other similarly shaped fish, though it generally ignores tankmates it cannot swallow. Honest advice: the eventual size of this fish puts it firmly out of reach for the vast majority of home setups, and it deserves serious thought before purchase regardless of how straightforward its listed care level appears.
