The featherback (Chitala chitala) is one of those fish that straddles the line between aquarium specimen and food fish, and in practice leans heavily toward the latter. Native to the Indus, Ganges-Brahmaputra, and Mahanadi river systems of India, this species inhabits a wide range of freshwater environments including rivers, lakes, seasonal wetlands, reservoirs, and canals. It has a distinctly humped body profile, very fine scales, and a long anal fin that runs continuously into the tail. A shared trait across the notopterid family. What sets it apart from its close relative C. ornata, which is far more common in the aquarium trade and is frequently mislabeled as this species, is its row of solid black spots along the rear flank, without the ringed pattern seen on C. ornata, plus a series of gold or silver bars across the back. Like all notopterids, it can breathe atmospheric air directly, which allows it to survive in low-oxygen conditions. It is a nocturnal predator with a surprisingly large mouth and will consume anything it can fit inside. While individuals can coexist in groups if space is generous, territorial disputes are common, particularly with fish of similar shape. Breeding has never been documented in captivity.
