The ocellated featherback (Chitala ornata) is one of those fish that stops people in their tracks at the fish store, usually when it's still a juvenile and fits comfortably in a display tank. The reality is that this species grows into a genuinely large predator, and that gap between first impression and adult size is responsible for a lot of rehoming headaches. Native to the river systems of Southeast Asia, including the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Meklong basins, this fish inhabits large and medium-sized rivers, moving into flooded forests during the wet season to feed and, in the wild, to spawn. It's an obligate air-breather, so you'll see it making regular trips to the surface. Identification is worth knowing: the ocellated featherback has large, ringed spots running above the base of its long anal-fin, which distinguishes it from close relatives. Its body has that characteristic knifefish silhouette. Humped back, long flowing underside fin, and a way of moving that looks almost sculptural. Temperament-wise, it's workable with fish too big to swallow, but territorial with its own kind and similar-shaped species. Albino and leucistic forms have been bred for the hobby, and the species is listed as beginner-level, though its eventual size means tankmate choices and long-term planning matter more than basic water chemistry.
