Found in the river basins of Brazil, Cichla kelberi is one of the smaller members of the peacock bass group, a collection of large South American cichlids known for their predatory instincts and vivid patterning. Wild fish inhabit slow-moving rivers, lakes, and flooded forests, where they are apex ambush hunters targeting smaller fish. In the aquarium, that predatory drive never really switches off, which means any tankmate small enough to fit in this fish's mouth is simply a meal waiting to happen. Despite that, Cichla kelberi is surprisingly manageable compared to some of its larger relatives, and experienced fishkeepers often find it more personable than expected. Individuals frequently recognize their owners and become quite interactive over time. The body is deep and muscular, typically showing a yellowish-green to olive base coloration broken up by a series of dark lateral blotches or bands, and mature males develop the characteristic nuchal hump on the forehead. Keeping one well comes down to a few key commitments: a large tank with good filtration to handle the heavy bioload a carnivore this size produces, and a diet of meaty foods. Tankmates, if kept at all, need to be robust and similarly sized.
