The Mayan cichlid (Cichlasoma urophthalmus) is a rugged, thick-bodied fish from the Atlantic drainages of Mexico down through Nicaragua, where it occupies a wide range of habitats including freshwater marshes, coastal lagoons, and mangrove swamps. What sets it apart from most freshwater cichlids is its remarkable salinity tolerance. This species can survive, and even reproduce, in fully marine conditions, which speaks to just how adaptable it is physiologically. It is also considered an invasive risk in parts of the United States for exactly that reason. In the aquarium, the Mayan cichlid is a genuinely hardy fish and one of the more forgiving cichlids from a care standpoint, but its size and temperament demand serious planning. Adults are large, territorial, and do not hesitate to bully or kill tankmates they consider threats. Or snacks. Smaller fish will be eaten, and more passive species will be harassed even if they are too large to swallow. Suitable companions are other robust cichlids, large catfish, or similarly tough characins, though aggression is never fully predictable. Keeping a bonded pair alone in a species tank is often the cleanest approach. Breeding follows typical substrate-spawning cichlid patterns, with aggression ramping up noticeably during courtship and fry-rearing.
