Found on tropical benthic reef environments around Curacao and the US Virgin Islands, Colpophyllia breviserialis is a scleractinian brain coral with a naturally restricted range in the Western Central Atlantic. Like other brain corals, it forms solid, calcified colonies with the characteristic meandering ridge-and-valley surface texture that gives the group their common nickname. Recruitment data from sites like Salt River Submarine Canyon in St. Croix suggest this species participates in the broader coral community dynamics of Caribbean reef systems, though it remains less commonly encountered than some of its close relatives. In the aquarium, it falls into the more manageable end of the care spectrum. A reasonable choice for a reef keeper who already has some experience with LPS corals and stable water quality but is not yet tackling the most demanding species. It appreciates moderate light and moderate water movement, neither needing intense flow nor tolerating stagnant conditions. As with any large polyp stony coral, consistency is the real key: swing-free chemistry and patience will reward you far more than chasing perfect parameters. It poses no threat to other reef inhabitants and will settle in well once given a stable spot on the rockwork.
