The Blackband Copella (Copella callolepis) is a small, slender characid from a wide stretch of the Amazon basin, turning up across river systems from the Peruvian tributaries of the Ucayali and Putumayo all the way east to the estuary in Pará State, Brazil. It stays under an inch and a half as an adult, with males distinguished by rows of blue-black to dark brownish-red spots along the body and a neat black triangular marking on the lower rays of the caudal fin. Useful details when trying to sort it from lookalikes like C. nattereri and C. meinkeni, with which it is frequently confused in the trade. In fact, this species spent years lumped in with C. nattereri before being formally revalidated in 2011, so misidentified fish are genuinely common. Behavior-wise it's peaceful but not really a standard community fish. It does best with similarly small, non-aggressive tankmates like other characids, smaller catfishes, and compact cichlids. Buy a mixed-sex group of eight to ten individuals and the males will start competing for female attention, showing off their best colors and putting on some genuinely interesting courtship behavior. Spawning involves depositing eggs on submerged plants, with the male taking guard duty through incubation. A rewarding choice for a species-focused or biotope setup.
