The Beautiful Scaled Characin (Copella nattereri) is a small lebiasinid from the soft, acidic waters of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, found across a broad range spanning Colombia, Brazil, and Venezuela. It's a slender fish carrying a distinctive dark lateral stripe running from snout to tail, a feature that separates it cleanly from close relatives like C. callolepis and C. meinkeni. Along the flanks, one to three rows of red spots add quiet detail, and males develop a black triangular marking on the lower caudal lobe. The species is frequently misidentified or sold under names like 'spotted tetra' or confused with C. nigrofasciata, which carries five or six rows of red spots rather than three or fewer. In terms of behavior, this is a peaceful fish but one that does better in a species-appropriate setup than a generic community tank. Pairing it with similarly sized characids, small catfishes, and non-aggressive cichlids tends to work well. Keeping a mixed-sex group of eight or more encourages natural schooling behavior and, importantly, brings out competitive male displays that are genuinely worth watching. Males establish temporary territories and actively court females, with the male taking sole responsibility for guarding the eggs once spawning is complete. Growth runs slow at every stage, so patience is part of the deal with this one.
