Dwarf-crenicichla (Crenicichla compressiceps) is a compact but formidable pike cichlid native to the lower Tocantins River basin in Brazil, a tributary system within the broader Amazon drainage. Despite its small adult size, this fish carries the full temperament of its larger pike cichlid relatives. Territorial, fast, and predatory in outlook. In the wild it hunts insects rather than other fish, lurking patiently before launching a rapid strike at prey, and it retains strong hunting instincts in captivity. Anything roughly half its size or smaller is at real risk of being treated as a meal, so tankmate selection deserves serious thought. Robust, similarly sized fish tend to fare best, and some keepers find that including a designated target fish actually benefits the species.
