The pike cichlid (Crenicichla lepidota) is one of the more widespread members of a large and often overlooked genus, ranging across the Paraná and Paraguay river drainages through Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, with additional coastal populations extending further along the South American Atlantic slope. It has the classic crenicichla body plan, long, laterally compressed, and built for ambush, with a pointed snout, large mouth, and a horizontal dark lateral stripe running from eye to tail that breaks into a spotted pattern depending on mood and condition. Coloration varies across its range, which is worth keeping in mind when sourcing fish. In the aquarium, this species is an unambiguous predator and will treat anything small enough to fit in its mouth as a meal, so tankmate selection deserves real thought. It tends to be territorial toward its own kind and similarly shaped fish, though a large, well-decorated tank with plenty of broken sightlines can make cohabitation more workable. Feeding is usually straightforward once settled in. Meaty foods like prawns, earthworms, and quality frozen offerings are all accepted. With a lifespan that can push into double digits, this is a fish worth investing proper space and planning into.
