The ringtailed pike cichlid (Crenicichla saxatilis) is one of those fish that commands respect the moment you understand what it is. A sleek, elongated ambush predator from the coastal drainages of Suriname, French Guiana, Guyana, Venezuela, and Trinidad. In the wild it haunts smaller creek systems for much of the year, though it pushes into rivers when water levels drop during the dry season. Its body plan says everything about its lifestyle: long, laterally compressed, built for short bursts of speed rather than open-water cruising. The ringed tail pattern that gives this species its common name is a useful identification feature, helping distinguish it from the many other pike cichlids in the hobby. In nature it feeds on aquatic insects, small fish, and some plant matter, and that opportunistic predator mentality carries straight into the aquarium. This is not a community fish by any stretch. It's aggressive enough that tankmates need to be chosen very carefully, and it will make short work of anything small enough to fit in its mouth.
