The rosy danio (Danio roseus) is a compact, active fish native to cool, shaded streams, springs, and small creeks of the Mekong basin across Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. In the wild it gravitates toward fast-moving, forest-covered water near springs and waterfalls, which gives you a clue about the kind of well-oxygenated, clean conditions it appreciates in the aquarium. Coloration runs toward soft pinks and purples with fin highlights that intensify when males spar with each other for female attention. A display that's well worth engineering by keeping a proper group. Ten or more individuals is the sweet spot; smaller numbers leave the fish skittish and the schooling behavior looks halfhearted. Rosy danios are genuinely easygoing tankmates and mix comfortably with other small cyprinids, tetras, livebearers, loaches, and catfish. Putting together a biotope around Mekong basin species is a rewarding project, and this little fish fits naturally into that concept. One note worth flagging for anyone buying fish: hybrids between this species and the pearl danio do circulate in the trade, often at very low prices, showing a mix of powdery-blue body coloration and red in the unpaired fins. If species purity matters to you, source carefully. Breeding follows typical danio egg-scattering behavior, and with some planning, raising fry is achievable for a reasonably experienced keeper.
