The Blackspot Barb (Dawkinsia filamentosa) is a solidly built cyprinid from southern India, particularly associated with Kerala, where it turns up in a wide range of habitats including clear hill streams, lowland rivers, reservoirs, and even brackish estuaries. Adults are most easily identified by the dark blotch on the caudal peduncle and, in males especially, by the elongated filament-like extensions that develop on the dorsal fin rays. A feature that gives rise to its other common name, the Filament Barb. This is one of the larger barbs regularly seen in the hobby, and its size and energy level mean it needs some space and appropriately robust tankmates. Peaceful fish that are easily intimidated or small enough to be viewed as snacks are poor choices. It does best in a school of eight to ten or more; keeping good numbers keeps individuals calmer, distributes any squabbling among the males, and produces the kind of coordinated group movement that makes the species worth keeping in the first place. Loaches and other active schooling cyprinids from a similar background tend to make the most natural-looking companions. Breeding follows typical egg-scattering cyprinid lines, with no parental care. Adults will eat their own eggs if given the chance, so separating them promptly is essential for any serious breeding effort. This is an intermediate-level fish best suited to keepers with some experience managing active, sizeable schooling species.
