Devario sp. giraffe is one of those fish that keeps taxonomists on their toes. First collected in 2007, it still lacks a formal scientific description, and what we know about it remains limited. The common name says it all: the body carries a broken, patchy arrangement of spots, rings, and vertical bars that genuinely recalls giraffe markings, formed by the fragmented lateral stripe pattern typical of the Devario genus. It's a solidly built, deep-bodied fish that grows quite large for a schooling cyprinid, so a spacious setup is non-negotiable. Despite being tagged as aggressive in some sources, the behavior is less about outright hostility and more about relentless energy. This fish feeds hard and moves fast, which can stress out shy or slow-moving tankmates. Keep it with robust companions of similar size: larger cyprinids, cichlids, loaches, and big characins all tend to hold their own. Like most schooling fish, it really should be kept in a group of eight or more. A proper school keeps individuals calmer, produces more natural behavior, and encourages males to show their best colors as they jockey for position. Despite its size requirements, the care level is considered beginner-friendly, making it an interesting choice for anyone running a larger community setup.
