The diadem dottyback (Pictichromis diadema) is one of those fish that makes an immediate impression despite its small size. The body is split cleanly between a vivid yellow lower half and a deep purple-to-magenta upper half, making identification straightforward once you've seen one. In the wild, this species comes from the sheltered, coral-rich reefs of the western Central Pacific, ranging through Peninsular Malaysia, the Philippines, and northern Borneo, where small groups tuck themselves among corals and rocky outcroppings. That secretive, territory-minded lifestyle in the wild translates directly into aquarium behavior. This fish is bold, confident, and will not hesitate to challenge tankmates it perceives as rivals or intruders, including fish considerably larger than itself. That personality is part of the appeal for many keepers, but it does mean thoughtful stocking decisions are essential. It tends to do best when introduced last into an established system, and pairing it with other dottybacks is risky unless the tank is large enough to break lines of sight. Reef compatibility is generally good, as it poses little threat to corals or most invertebrates. Its manageable size and hardiness make it a workable choice for intermediate keepers who plan their community carefully.
