The chessboard cichlid (Dicrossus maculatus) is a small dwarf cichlid from the blackwater rivers of the Brazilian Amazon, including the Tapajós and Maués drainages. It is sometimes confused with its close relative Dicrossus filamentosa, but the spade-shaped tail is a reliable tell once you know what to look for. Despite being listed as a beginner-level fish in terms of day-to-day keeping, it is genuinely rare in the hobby and that alone makes finding one a small victory. It is exceptionally peaceful toward tankmates and does well in a quiet, well-planted setup. But breeding is a different story entirely. Reproducing this species successfully demands very soft, highly acidic water, and the quality of that water has to be impeccable. What makes the effort worthwhile is watching the female in action: around spawning time her ventral fins flush a vivid yellow, and she uses them almost like signal flags to direct her fry. Extending them to call the young toward her, folding them to tell the brood to hold still. She will actively herd the fry to a sheltered spot each evening. Adding a small shoal of tetras to the tank appears to sharpen the adults' parental instincts noticeably, which is one of those quirky details that makes this species genuinely fascinating to keep.
