Double-star coral (Diploastrea heliopora) is one of those species that commands attention through sheer scale and architecture rather than flashy color. In the wild, colonies grow into massive domes reaching several meters across, and the dense, heavy skeleton makes this one of the more physically substantial reef-building corals in the Indo-West Pacific. From the Red Sea all the way out to Kiribati and down to Australia. The surface has a distinctive geometric quality, covered in low conical corallites with thick walls and small openings that create a tight, almost tiled pattern. Which explains the honeycomb nickname. Coloration tends toward understated: creams, greys, and occasional muted greens are typical, so this isn't a coral you're keeping for vivid pigmentation. Like many large-polyp stony corals, it extends its tentacles to feed at night, staying retracted through the day. In the aquarium it adapts reasonably well under moderate lighting and flow, and its tolerance for both exposed and sheltered reef conditions in the wild suggests some flexibility. Though its intermediate care rating means it's better suited to a keeper who already has a stable, mature system running. Growth in captivity is slow, as you'd expect from such a dense, calcified structure.
