The longsnout distichodus (Distichodus lusosso) is one of the few members of its genus that shows up with any regularity in the hobby, and juveniles make an immediate impression. Bold patterning and rich color make young fish genuinely hard to ignore. The catch is that much of that visual drama fades as the fish matures, leaving adults that are handsome but considerably more subdued than what you brought home. The species is native to the Congo River basin, ranging from the lower Congo all the way up to the upper Lualaba, and it's built for the wide, well-oxygenated waters of that system. It's often compared to the more frequently seen D. sexfasciatus, but the longsnout can be told apart by its noticeably narrower, more pointed head and its smaller adult size. Despite the "peaceful" label, temperament in this species is genuinely variable. Some individuals stay agreeable throughout their lives while others grow increasingly difficult with tankmates as they age. Keeping a group can smooth out that edge, but only in a tank with serious space to spare. Smaller or timid tankmates are a bad match regardless. Large bichirs, robust characins, cyprinids, and sizable catfish tend to hold their own alongside this species. It's a committed herbivore, so a plant-heavy aquascape will need some rethinking.
