The banded pipefish (Dunckerocampus dactyliophorus) is one of the more visually distinctive members of the pipefish family, wrapped in bold alternating rings of white and reddish-brown along its entire body. In the wild, it ranges widely across the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa out to Samoa and from Japan down to Australia, where it tucks itself into caves, crevices, and the shadowed undersides of ledges on reef slopes and in lagoons. It tends to be solitary or found in small pairs or loose groups, drifting slowly near shelter rather than venturing into open water. Like other pipefishes, males carry the fertilized eggs in a brood pouch located under the tail. A reproductive quirk shared with their seahorse relatives. This species has been successfully bred in captivity, which is a genuine plus for anyone interested in responsible fishkeeping. Diet-wise, it targets small invertebrates, and getting it to accept prepared or frozen foods can sometimes take patience. Despite being listed as a beginner-appropriate species, prospective keepers should still be prepared to provide a well-established reef system with plenty of hiding spots and a steady supply of appropriate live or frozen prey to keep this fish thriving long-term.
