Found across a broad sweep of Amazonian South America, from the Ucayali drainage in Peru downstream through the Solimoes-Amazon corridor to the Trombetas River, this large eartheater cichlid, Geophagus proximus, is actually one of the more sociable species you can keep once you understand its needs. Despite being labeled aggressive, it poses little threat to anything too large to swallow whole, and outside of spawning it lives in loose, relaxed aggregations with a clear but manageable dominance hierarchy. The key is numbers: a group of five to eight individuals is the practical minimum, since smaller numbers tend to produce either a bullied outcast or a group too nervous to settle. It belongs to the G. surinamensis species complex, and true to form it has a robust, deep-bodied profile with a distinctive dark midlateral blotch, a dark preopercular marking, and a brownish caudal fin carrying light stripes on the upper lobe. Worth knowing: this species is genuinely scarce in the trade and frequently mislabeled, so sourcing it correctly takes some effort. It is a biparental mouthbrooder with fascinating, attentive parental behavior, and given good feeding and consistent water maintenance, pairs will breed without much prompting. A rewarding cichlid for keepers with appropriately sized tanks who appreciate watching natural social dynamics play out.
