Erromyzon sp. red spots is one of those fish that hobbyists encounter under a patchwork of trade names. Strawberry Spot Sucker Loach, Gastromyzon sp., Pseudogastromyzon sp. Partly because its formal taxonomy is still unresolved. Whatever you call it, the fish is visually distinct among its genus: a dark body crossed by thin, pale vertical bars, spotted head markings, and in older individuals a row of vivid red spots sitting right along the lateral line within those pale bars. No other currently described Erromyzon shares that color scheme, which makes identification straightforward once you know what to look for. In the wild this fish occupies fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams across mainland East and Southeast Asia, and its relatives in the tank should reflect that. Genera like Garra, Barilius, and rheophilic gobies in the Stiphodon group are commonly cited as compatible neighbors. Erromyzon sp. red spots is largely peaceful but does show mild territorial behavior toward its own kind, which means keeping a group of at least four is genuinely important for the fish to settle and thrive rather than just a general recommendation. Captive breeding has been documented, with pairs adopting a distinctive spawning posture against vertical rock faces and burying eggs in the substrate. Fry are photophobic and hide initially, only emerging at around 10 mm. A rewarding loach for a keeper willing to meet its flow and social needs.
