The redfin pickerel (Esox americanus americanus) is the smallest member of the pike family native to eastern North America, and it brings the full predatory personality of its larger relatives into a more manageable package. Its body follows the classic pike blueprint. Long, torpedo-shaped, and built for explosive short-distance strikes rather than open-water pursuit. The name comes from the reddish-orange coloring on the fins, which contrasts nicely against a pattern of dark chainlike markings along the flanks. In the wild it inhabits slow-moving or still waters with dense vegetation, and that preference for weedy cover carries directly into how it behaves in an aquarium.
