The false-eyed pufferfish (Canthigaster papua) is a small toby found across the Indo-West Pacific, from the eastern Indian Ocean through the western Pacific. In the wild it turns up in a wide range of reef environments, from silty coastal shallows to pristine outer reef walls. Juveniles often hang around shallow estuaries, while adults tend to favor deeper drop-offs, frequently seen in pairs cruising along the wall. The species gets its common name from a prominent false eyespot marking, a neat bit of natural misdirection that helps deflect attention from its real eyes. Like other tobies in the Canthigaster group, it has that characteristic boxy puffer shape and can inflate when threatened, though in a well-run aquarium that response rarely gets triggered. It's generally considered one of the more approachable puffers for hobbyists who are newer to saltwater keeping, provided you understand the core tradeoff with the group: those beak-like fused teeth are designed to crunch hard-shelled invertebrates, so any ornamental shrimp, snails, or corals in the tank are fair game. Plan your tankmates accordingly and this little fish is a rewarding, long-lived resident.
