Twig catfish (Farlowella mariaelenae) are among the most convincingly camouflaged freshwater fish you can keep, with a slender, elongated body and rigid posture that really does look like a piece of waterlogged wood drifting in the current. This species comes from the western Orinoco River basin in South America, where it likely spends its days clinging to branches and submerged vegetation in slow or gently flowing water. In the aquarium, you'll see exactly the same behavior. It latches onto driftwood, plant stems, or the glass and grazes algae and biofilm methodically. Like others in the Farlowella genus, it has the ability to breathe air as a supplement when oxygen levels drop, which is a handy adaptation for the warm, sometimes oxygen-poor backwaters it calls home. Despite that resilience, it's still rated intermediate care for a reason. These fish are sensitive to water quality and don't handle fluctuating conditions well, so a well-established, stable tank is essential. They're peaceful to a fault and can be outcompeted for food easily, so tank mates need to be chosen with care. Given enough grazing surface, quality sinking foods, and clean water, they're genuinely rewarding fish to watch.
