About
Asian snakeheads (Channa sp. 'fire and ice') are a compact and visually arresting member of the family Channidae, first showing up in the aquarium trade around 2009. The common name describes the color scheme well: vivid red pigmentation rings the eye and corners of the mouth, while blue tones provide contrast across the head, and a bold reddish band runs along the edge of the tail. These features make it relatively straightforward to distinguish from similar-looking relatives. Its origin appears to be the border region between Myanmar and western Thailand, likely within the Salween river drainage, though formal scientific description is still pending. Like other snakeheads, this species has paired suprabranchial chambers that allow it to breathe atmospheric air directly, so you will regularly see it rising to the surface for gulps of air. A cover on the tank is non-negotiable. Temperament is where things get complicated. Juveniles can initially be kept together, but aggression escalates sharply as they mature, and a species-only setup is strongly recommended. Established pairs tend to tolerate each other, though remain hostile toward any other conspecifics. On the positive side, this species has been bred in captivity, it is a paternal mouthbrooder, and its relatively small adult size and reported beginner-level care requirements make it more accessible than many other snakeheads, provided the keeper is prepared to manage its territorial nature.
