The Oyapock Eartheater (Geophagus camopiensis) is a cichlid from the Oyapock and Approuague river drainages of South America, where it inhabits rocky river stretches with sandy-rocky substrates, particularly in calmer areas near cascades during low water periods. It belongs to the G. surinamensis group and can be identified by the absence of vertical bars on the flanks, a prominent dark midlateral blotch, and a caudal fin marked with pale blotches rather than horizontal bands. Males develop long filamentous extensions on the caudal, dorsal, and ventral fins. This is a species rarely seen outside specialist circles, occasionally available through dedicated breeders rather than mainstream retail. While it carries a reputation as one of the less peaceful members of its genus, it poses no real threat to fish of any appreciable size, and a wide range of similarly-minded tankmates will work well with it. It is strongly social and should always be kept in groups of at least five to eight individuals. Smaller numbers tend to produce nervous, poorly-settled fish, with weaker specimens bearing the brunt of aggression from dominant tank mates. Breeding follows a larvophilous mouthbrooding pattern where eggs are initially tended on a flat surface before the female takes the newly hatched fry into her mouth, with the male's involvement varying considerably between individuals. Despite its territorial tendencies, this is considered a manageable species for keepers with basic cichlid experience.
