Found in the Ribeira de Iguape River basin of southeastern Brazil, this small cichlid, Geophagus iporangensis, belongs to the broader 'G.' brasiliensis species group. A collection of closely related eartheaters whose taxonomy is still being worked out by researchers. It doesn't show up often in fish rooms, which is a genuine shame, because its modest adult size makes it far more manageable than many of its larger relatives. Adults can be told apart from similar species by their comparatively plain coloration, lacking the scattered reflective blue scales on the body and head that you'd see on cousins like G. brasiliensis. Juveniles, on the other hand, are easily mixed up with other members of the group, so sourcing from a reputable seller who can confirm the ID is worth the effort. Like other eartheaters, this species is a substrate sifter by nature, so a soft, sandy bottom isn't just decorative. It lets the fish behave naturally. Temperament is peaceful overall, though males become territorial around spawning time, and very small tankmates are best avoided. Pairs are biparental substrate spawners, meaning both fish take an active role in guarding eggs and fry. Intermediate-level experience is a fair benchmark for keeping this species well.
