Native to the Guaporé River basin in the western Amazon, Geophagus megasema is one of the lesser-known members of the sprawling G. surinamensis species group. A cluster of closely related eartheaters that has caused no end of identification headaches in the hobby. This particular species can be distinguished from its relatives by the absence of dark markings on the cheek region, no vertical flank barring, and a fairly large, rounded dark spot on the mid-flank. It is genuinely rare in the aquarium trade and has mostly circulated through private collectors rather than commercial channels. Despite being labeled as aggressive and territorial in care sheets, the reality is more nuanced. Outside of breeding, this species is quite tolerant of tankmates and poses no real threat to anything that isn't bite-sized. The aggression rating mainly applies to rival substrate-dwellers and to dynamics within the group itself. Like other geophagines, G. megasema is naturally gregarious and does best in groups of five to eight, where a dominance hierarchy forms and individuals feel secure. Kept in smaller numbers, weaker fish tend to absorb too much attention from dominant ones. Breeding has been achieved in aquaria. It is a biparental mouthbrooder with elaborate spawning behavior and genuinely attentive parental care, though patience is needed as sexual maturity can take over a year.
