Found in the Atrato, San Juan, and Baudó river basins of Colombia, Geophagus pellegrini is one of those cichlids that quietly rewards the keeper who seeks it out. It belongs to the 'G.' steindachneri group, a cluster of closely related species with tangled taxonomy, and the easiest way to tell it apart from its cousins is by its distinctly yellowish coloration. That said, a word of caution: fish sold in the trade as 'G.' steindachneri or 'G.' crassilabris are sometimes actually this species, so sourcing from reputable breeders matters. In the aquarium, pellegrini behaves much as you'd hope from a mid-sized cichlid. It's genuinely peaceful outside of spawning activity and poses no real threat to tankmates beyond the tiniest fry. Like other eartheaters it will sift substrate in search of food, so a soft sandy bottom suits it well. Breeding follows a maternal mouthbrooding strategy, with pairs forming only loosely and temporarily during spawning. The female carries the eggs, and pair bonds dissolve quickly afterward. An intermediate-level species overall, it does best in soft, warm, acidic water that mirrors its Colombian blackwater origins. It's not a fish for hard alkaline setups.
