Green Cardinal
Paracheirodon simulans
The neon's lesser-known cousin, with a greener stripe and wilder roots.

About
The green cardinal (Paracheirodon simulans) is the rarest and most quietly beautiful of the three Paracheirodon species, easily overshadowed in the trade by its more famous relatives, the neon and cardinal tetras. Native to the blackwater rivers of the upper Negro and Orinoco basins in South America, it lives in soft, acidic conditions that closely mirror the tannin-stained streams it calls home. Visually, it resembles both congeners at a glance, but look closer and you'll notice the lateral stripe leans distinctly green rather than blue, runs further across the head and eye, and extends all the way to the base of the tail. Traits that separate it from the neon and cardinal once you know what to look for. Some wild-caught individuals also carry metallic golden scales, reportedly linked to a parasite that triggers extra guanine deposits; these are sometimes sold as 'platinum' or 'gold' variants. Unlike neon or cardinal tetras, this species is not commercially bred at scale, so expect to pay more and see it less often at your local store. It's a peaceful schooling fish, but its specific water requirements and small size mean it does best in a species-focused setup or alongside equally tiny, non-aggressive companions rather than a general community tank. A group of at least eight will bring out its natural confidence and schooling behavior.
