The melon barb (Haludaria fasciata) is a small, lively cyprinid native to the rivers of southern India, where it inhabits flowing water across several distinct regional populations. Each with its own color patterning, ranging from olive-green to crimson bodies with varying numbers of dark vertical bars. That variability is part of what makes this species taxonomically interesting: what we call the melon barb may actually represent a complex of closely related forms still working through the process of speciation. In the aquarium it's a genuinely peaceful community fish, though its enthusiasm at feeding time means very timid or slow-moving tankmates can sometimes get crowded out. Keep a mixed-sex group of eight to ten or more and you'll see the real appeal. Rival males put on a constant low-level display as they compete for females and social rank, and that's when their colors really come through. It works well alongside other small cyprinids, tetras, loaches, livebearers, and catfishes, and its relaxed water chemistry requirements make it easy to pair with a wide range of species. A forgiving choice for newer keepers, it will even spawn in a well-maintained community tank without much prompting. The melon barb doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves.
