Found in the Orinoco River drainage of Venezuela, Hemiancistrus guahiborum is a relatively recently described loricariid. Science only formally recognized it in 2005, with its species name borrowed from a local indigenous tribe. It's sometimes called the spotted orange seam plec, a nod to the warm orange edging along its fins that sets it apart from many of its plainer relatives. Like others in its genus, it has a facultative air-breathing capability, meaning it can gulp atmospheric air when dissolved oxygen is low. A handy trick for life in variable tropical waterways. In the wild it shares its habitat with other loricariids, including Peckoltia and fellow Hemiancistrus species, and it adapts reasonably well to community aquariums that mirror those conditions. Characins from genera like Anostomus and Metynnis make good company, as do rheophilic cichlids. The main caveat is territory. This fish is genuinely aggressive toward its own kind and similarly shaped tankmates, so if you're keeping more than one, every individual needs its own clearly defined hiding spot or the bickering will escalate. Captive breeding hasn't been documented yet, though its cave-dwelling habits in the wild suggest it's probably a cave spawner. An intermediate-level keeper with a well-structured tank should do fine with it.
